Work Experience Programme, Gateway

Gateway is a programme that offers work experience for Year 12 and 13 students.  It gives these students an opportunity to work a minimum of 30-40 hours in a work place environment be it Early Childhood, Retail, Hotel Management, Banking, Food and Hospitality to name only a few, with also the addition of gaining Unit Standards which is most beneficial to students gaining credits for when they may choose to leave school.

We are looking for enthusiastic, work ready students who can show responsibility in getting out there and gaining confidence with a professional manner, and are able to represent Botany Downs Secondary College with pride.

Student applicants will go through a selection process which depends on several things:

  • Individual student timetables
  • Attitude and commitment to the Gateway Programme
  • Be willing to work school holidays and possibly after school
  • Be work-ready!
  • Completition of appropriate Unit Standards
  • Costs
  • Availability of suitable work experience

We try to make the best overall matches for our students. We try not to disrupt student timetables if at all possible and will make most of our placements in the holidays and/or after school.

As part of the programme, students are to achieve suitable Unit Standards. As the Unit Standards are a considerable cost to the programme, there is an expectation that the student will complete and achieve the credits offered to the best of their ability.

Eighty three Year 12 and 13 students participated in our Gateway work experience programme. None of this could have been achieved without the excellent support of our local business community, the good standing of our college, the support of our staff and parents, and the ambassadorship of our students.
