Seaweek 2025

The ocean is a friend of mine.” – Moana, 2018

All life starts at the sea. Seaweek is about celebrating and raising awareness about what we can do to protect our oceans. Covering 71% of our planet, the ocean provides us with oxygen and kaimoana, and is home to thousands of different species.

If we continue to harm the ocean, we risk endangering not just its life, but our own.

This year’s Seaweek events allowed students to deepen their understanding of our sea. On Tuesday we held a Shark Chamber, with interactive ocean activities and educational shark videos. Then on Wednesday, our leaders held a microplastics activity which enabled students to see first-hand what single use plastic is doing to our planet. The OceanGuessr game challenged students to locate and learn about different parts of our oceans, using visual hints like coastlines, sea life, and water quality to determine where in the world a picture was taken. Students also got to make their own sea animals from recycled paper as well as partake in creating a beautiful chalk art display. To conclude the week, the movie night featuring Moana received an exceptionally positive response.

As Seaweek 2025 comes to an end, we need to remember no matter how near or far we are from the sea, we need to treat it as our friend and protect it. While humans have done irreversible damage to our environment, it’s not too late to make a change for the better.
