Gateway Work Experience Programme

Gateway is a programme that offers work experience for Years 12 and 13 students.

It gives these students an opportunity to work a minimum of 30-40 hours in a work place environment be it such as Early Childhood, Retail, Hotel Management, Banking, Food and Hospitality, while also gaining NCEA credits for Unit Standards which is most beneficial to students gaining credits for when they may choose to leave school.

Gateway Administrator: Mrs Nicola Shand-Marcusson, ext. #283

We are looking for enthusiastic, work-ready students, who can show responsibility by getting out into the workplace, gaining confidence, project a professional manner, and represent Botany Downs Secondary College with pride.

Selection process

Student applicants will go through a selection process which depends on several things:

  • Individual student timetables
  • Attitude and commitment to the Gateway Programme
  • Being willing to work school holidays and possibly after school
  • Being work-ready!
  • Completion of appropriate Unit Standards
  • Costs
  • Availability of suitable work experience
We try to make the best overall matches for our students. We try not to disrupt student timetables if at all possible and will endeavour to make most of our placements in the holidays and or after school.

Unit Standards

As part of the programme, students are able to achieve suitable Unit Standards. As the Unit Standards are a considerable cost to the programme, there is an expectation that the student will complete and achieve the credits offered to the best of their ability.

Eighty-three Years 12 and 13 students have so far participated in our Gateway work experience programme.

None of this could have been achieved without the excellent support of our local business community, the good standing of our college, the support of our staff and parents, and the ambassadorship of our students.

Interested in applying?

All students of Years 12 and 13 who are interested are welcome to apply.

Form also available from the college Careers Centre located at the far end of the Conference Centre.
