BDSC Eco Art Competition

20 Nov 2025

Art is one of humanity’s oldest forms of communication, and to this day is one of the most effective ways of bringing people together. On Saturday 4 October, BDSC Enviroschools hosted our first ever Eco Art Competition. We had seventeen artists present their work during the exhibit in the Diversity Centre on Tui Rd, spotlighting six artists from our own school.

Unlike conventional art competitions which reward skill alone, each work was evaluated and judged based on their environmental impact and relevance to the sustainability topics at hand. The competition also featured Auckland Council’s Parul Sood as our guest judge, along with Otara Lakes and Waterways who presented about sustainability and what we can do to make a difference.

Submissions to the competition ranged from paintings and sculptures all the way to short film and music scores. Each work was a reminder that beauty can co-exist with responsibility, allowing each member of audience to reflect on our society’s stance on consumption, waste, and our willingness to break the negative cycle.

Congratulations to Joanne Hseih 12K18 (Painting Category), Miren Patel 10S4 (Open Category) and Chrystal Zhang 11D9, Marli Roodt 11K12, and Anya Mackor 11K12 (Digital Category) for placing!

Progress is a collective action. As much as one person can do to help the planet, it is numbers that give us power to make real progress. In the end, everyone who participated in the competition walked out as not just artists, but catalysts for environmental change.
