Year 9 Chinese Class Making Mooncake

14 Nov 2025

At the end of Term 3, our Year 9 Chinese class was given the opportunity to learn about the Mid-Autumn festival and its celebratory food, the Mooncake. Our teacher, Laoshi Kuang, invited some mooncake experts to teach us about the Mid-Autumn festival. We learned the Chinese name of the festival and its pronunciation, the traditional story behind it, and how people in China celebrate it!

One of the most popular ways to celebrate is by making mooncakes with your family. You’d be surprised how many different types of mooncakes there are! From pork-filled Suzhou mooncakes to deliciously colourful and sweet ice cream mooncakes. However, we were taught to make the traditional Cantonese-style mooncakes, which we made without any kitchen equipment and only our hands with limited ingredients! They turned out to be surprisingly good and when I brought some home for my family, they were quite impressed with how easy it was to make such a delicacy.

It was a very fun experience, and I definitely enjoyed not only the making of mooncakes but also learning about the history and stories behind them.
