Friday 12 June was a special day in the history of Botany Downs Secondary College. The Inaugural Z Club meeting led by Mrs Hubaan Bhandari took place. Sixty-four students gathered in BL1.1 to learn about the club’s purpose and future direction. The session introduced members to the core values of Zonta International, including service, leadership, equality, and community engagement.
Gay Gallagher, Director – Advocacy, ZONTA East Auckland, provided an inspiring overview of Zonta’s vision of building a better world for women and girls. She outlined the organisation’s key areas of focus, including education, advocacy, and the prevention of gender-based violence. Students also learned about fundraising initiatives that support local and international projects aimed at improving opportunities for women and girls.
A strong emphasis was placed on advocacy and empowerment, encouraging students to become informed leaders and active voices for positive change. Members explored ways they can contribute through awareness campaigns, community service, and leadership opportunities within the school and wider community.
Also in attendance were Mrs Sue Miller, Vice President, ZONTA East Auckland, and BDSC staff, Ms Wilma Viegas, Honorary ZONTA member, and Mrs Kantha Krishna.
The meeting, a resounding success, marked an exciting beginning for the BDSC Z Club and set the foundation for meaningful action, collaboration, and service. It is envisaged that the club will be chartered in 2027.
