In the July holidays, our team of nineteen dancers competed in the Blueprint Street Dance Schools Competition. The student leaders were Kyra Singh 12S10, Sienna Walmsley 12E8, and Eric Zhou 12S10. They choreographed a three-minute routine melding different street styles to a self-cut track featuring songs such as Voulez Vous by Abba, Drop by Timbaland, and 7-11 by Beyonce.
The group has worked incredibly hard, with two morning rehearsals each week for two terms. A big thank you to Mr Soriano and Mrs Thompson for overseeing these. On the competition day, we enjoyed the beautiful sunshine in the first week of the holidays as the students mixed with twelve other schools during the two morning workshops by industry professionals Celina Torres and John Bernado, and then the performance run throughs.
The evening kicked off with individual battles and special mention needs to be made of our students who were brave enough to take to the stage: Emma Amansure 9E2, Chloe Chan 9K12, Gianna Lin 11B1, Xavier Newell 13K12, and Eric Zhou 12S10. It was amazing seeing all the talent across the schools and to feel the energy and support the students gave each other. Then it was time for the schools competition. The Dorothy Winstone Auditorium at Auckland Girls Grammar was packed and the audience let every school hear their support.
Mr Sequeira and I were impressed by our students. It was a long day when you had to be at school by 8.00am to catch the bus to the competition and know you weren’t going to finish until 9.00pm, but the students stayed focused all day, worked hard, and put on an incredible performance. They keep stepping up their performance each year and I’m not the only one who’s looking forward to see what they do in 2025.
