Model UN Assembly

Two BDSC teams took part in the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) event at Rosmini College event recently. The Rotary-sponsored event attracted over 100 schools from the Auckland and Northland regions. It provided delegates with a hands-on insight into the workings of the United Nations.

The following is an account by Ryan Kan 13E2, captain of Team Lebanon.

MUNA was an immensely engaging experience immersing our teams in challenging and competitive debates regarding current world issues. As the representatives of Cuba and Lebanon, we approached real life issues affecting people around the world, such as Climate Change, Territorial Sovereignty and the Equality of Women. Immersing ourselves in our respective nation’s culture, history and politics, we came to understand the reasons and views of different groups, some which we may have never otherwise. We also heard from UN officials, their stories of working in the field, and came away with a newfound inspiration that we would be the next generation of gears and cogs in the international diplomatic stage.

Both days, we got to know delegates and representatives from other schools, forging friendships in fiery speeches on stage, and next to the sausage sizzle. Not only did MUNA allow us to engage and know more about the world’s issues, but also allowed us to meet liked minded people across Auckland. All in all, MUNA was an experience not to be missed, and no doubt one we recommend to anyone who is interested in global and geopolitical affairs.

Tiffany Chan 13K6 (Captain), Neil Choi 13K12 and Jack Hodson 13J5 represented Cuba. Ryan Kan 13E2 (Captain), Joshua Cheng 13S10 and Annabelle Zhou 13B1 represented Lebanon.
