13 Jun 2024

In a world where diversity is celebrated, cultural festivals stand as vibrant reminders of the rich tapestry of human heritage. Among these celebrations, Polyfest shines as a beacon of cultural expression and unity.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Polyfest is its inclusivity. It provides a platform for not only Pacific Island communities but also other ethnic groups to participate and celebrate diversity. Schools and cultural groups come together to showcase their talents, fostering understanding and appreciation among participants and spectators alike. It’s a melting pot of cultures, where differences are embraced and celebrated.

BDSC showcased the talents of five diverse groups on the diversity stage this year, including Chinese, Lion, Indian, and Punjabi Dance performances. The Samoan group, led by Amazie Aloese 11J11, delivered a captivating performance that was warmly received by the audience. Embracing the theme of ‘Me anga whakamuri kia koke whakamua’ – ‘Looking to our past to determine our future’, each group demonstrated dedication and skill.

Under the leadership of Candice Wang 12K6, the Chinese dance group offered a mesmerising display, while the Punjabi dance group, choreographed by Simran Kaur 13J5, showcased the vibrant culture of the northern region of India. Through diligent practice and commitment, all five groups delivered outstanding performances, culminating in a memorable showcase on the diversity stage, with the Chinese group earning coverage in the Stuff newspaper.

The Punjabi dance group’s exceptional performance earned them the prestigious Judge’s Choice Award of the year, affirming the dedication and talent of all involved.

Polyfest is not just about entertainment; it’s about fostering cultural pride and preserving heritage. For many participants, especially the youth, it serves as a way to connect with their roots in an increasingly globalised world. Through the festival, they learn about their ancestors’ traditions and values, instilling a sense of belonging and identity that transcends geographical boundaries.
