NZ Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge Final

12 Sep 2022

On Wednesday 7 September Wei Zin Chan 12D3 and Ashley Hewlett 12S10 competed (representing the Auckland region) in The NZ National Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge grand final. They were up against the top seven schools in the country. For the competition they had to prepare four portions of an entrée with beetroot as the principle ingredient and four portions of a main using Waitoa chicken supreme and three locally grown vegetables in 90 minutes.

We are very pleased to announce that the girls placed second in the competition, winning for the school an industrial Moffit Turbofan oven (valued at $3,500) and a $500 Bidfood voucher. They also each won for themselves a range prizes including restaurant vouchers, chefs knives and uniform and a back pack full of goodies from the sponsors. They received a gold medal which means they scored between 90-100 points, so the points between first and second place must have been very close. The day after the event the girls were taken on a full day culinary journey where they got to eat lots of delicious food, watch cooking demos by chefs, explore behind the scenes of a five star hotel and more.

The NSSCC was a wonderful experience for them and I am sure has made them more hungry for a career in the Hospitality sector. We are so very proud. Well done Ash and Zin!!!
