On Friday 4 June 2021, two students accompanied by Ms Hood will travel to Wellington for the National Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Festival.
Shalom de Souza 13E8, who was chosen last year during the festival, which took place as an e-festival, to represent BDSC at the national festival went on to the National Schools Shakespeare Production week in Otago. From her work and performance during this week Shalom was chosen to be one of the 24 members of the Young Shakespeare Company who will attend a three and a half week long performance, education and workshop experience at The Globe London and the RSC at Stratford Upon Avon. The company will work with professionals in creating a production of a Shakespeare play which will be performed on The Globe stage in London, in 2022.
Mikyla Khalil-Flexman 13B1 who has previously performed on the Michael Fowler Stage at the National festival, was chosen this year during the Regional festival which took place at Botany Downs Secondary College at the beginning of April. She was chosen as the individual to attend as the National School’s Shakespeare direct entry candidate. She will be attending the workshop and performance week later this year.
During Queen’s Birthday weekend the students will be undertaking workshops with theatre professionals and viewing a number of productions from students who are coming from throughout New Zealand for the festival. Shalom will be performing as part of the Young Shakespeare Company on Sunday evening. The students will also be attending parliament and listening to theatre professional and artists discuss their work.
